Abstract

This article analyzes the process of the first general population census conducted in 1897 
by the Russian Empire in the Turkestan region, as well as its main purposes and results. The main 
purpose of the census was to determine the demographic situation, ethnic composition, socio-
economic conditions, and population distribution of the region. The study highlights the 
significance of this process in shaping the administrative system, tax system, and colonial policy  in Turkestan. It also analyzes data on population size, ethnic composition, and territorial 
distribution. The article reveals the scientific and practical importance of the 1897 population 
census based on historical sources.
