Abstract

This article examines, using a comparative method, the sociolinguistic factors of gender stereotypes in Uzbek and English proverbs – the interplay of language, society and national mentality. Patriarchal social structure, religious-cultural values, collectivist and individualist norms, and norms of speech behaviour are analysed. The study reveals both sociolinguistically universal and nationally specific aspects of gender stereotypes encoded in proverbs.
