Abstract

This article examines the category of verbal gradation in Russian as a functional-semantic phenomenon reflecting the ability of the language system to convey the degree, intensity, and phasing of an action or state. The analysis aims to identify the mechanisms by which gradual meanings are formed in verbal semantics, as well as to describe the role of lexical meaning, aspect category, contextual modifiers of degree, and intonation in their actualization. Particular attention is paid to distinguishing lexically gradual verbs from verbs that acquire the meaning of degree in a specific context. It is shown that verbal gradation in Russian is multilevel and is realized through the interaction of grammatical and pragmatic factors.
