Abstract

This article analyzes the functional and pragmatic characteristics of commissive speech acts within the framework of speech act theory. The conceptual foundations of the theory are analized, with particular attention to the illocutionary nature of commissive acts. This article argues that the defining feature of commissive speech acts lies in the speaker’s commitment to a future course of action. The pragmatic orientation of commissives, their role in shaping social relations, and their function in generating communicative expectations are highlighted. The findings confirm the independent status of commissive speech acts within the speech act system and demonstrate their significance in pragmalinguistic analysis.                                                                       Keywords: speech act, commissive speech act, illocutionary force, pragmatics, discourse, J.R. Searle’s classification.
