This article provides a consistent analysis of the formation and historical development of the concept of discourse from antiquity to modern linguistic stages. In particular, it traces scientific views from the concept of “logos” in the works of Plato and Aristotle to structuralism, post-structuralism, and contemporary cognitive and multimodal approaches. The study also examines the linguopragmatic nature of discourse markers, including their connective, explanatory, and communicative functions in speech. Furthermore, it highlights the stages of discourse studies in Uzbek linguistics, illustrating their historical roots through examples from Divanu lughat at-turk and the works of Alisher Navoi.
