The article examines a methodology for developing students’ oral speech in higher education through the structured organization of academic debate. Academic debate is a form of educational activity that simultaneously activates such competencies as logical thinking, argumentation, analysis of opposing viewpoints, and the ability to defend one’s opinion in a cultured and respectful manner. Structured organization implies the prior clear definition of the debate’s objectives, role distribution, time management and turn-taking procedures, criteria for presenting arguments, stages of questioning and rebuttal, formulation of final conclusions, as well as the use of an assessment rubric.
