LITERARY AND SUFI INTERPRETATIONS OF THE IMAGE OF “THE PEOPLE” IN ALISHER NAVOI’S LYRICS

This study is devoted to a systematic analysis of the multilayered artistic and mystical (irfan) interpretations of the concept and image of “the people” in the works of Alisher Navoi. The article identifies the lexical, Sufi, and poetic meanings of the term “people” and examines how, in Navoi’s worldview, it acquires ethical and mystical significance through such notions as olami khalq, jahoni khalq, sirri khalq, khalq bi’l-himmat, and khalqi jadid. The research reveals the contradictory aspects of the image of the people in Navoi’s lyric poetry within the contexts of love, sincerity, hypocrisy, trust in God, service, and enlightenment, demonstrating that the people may appear at times as a symbol of heedlessness and blame, and at other times as a source of wisdom, experience, and moral criteria. Drawing on examples from the poet’s ghazals, the functional role of the image of the people within the triad “Truth — people — lover” is elucidated, highlighting its significance as a field of trials and spiritual tests along the Sufi path. As a result, the study substantiates that in Navoi’s poetics, the image of the people is not merely a social collective, but a literary category endowed with profound mystical and philosophical meaning.
