Abstract

In the twentieth century, how the history of Uzbek pottery art was studied, how research methods changed, and what issues remain unresolved are all examined in detail in the article. The main aim is to assess how the study of pottery has developed, to identify what has changed, and to determine which questions still remain open. The study employs such methods as historiographical analysis, comparative analysis, source studies, and the analysis of visual materials. It also highlights key aspects such as the shift from mere data collection to socio-cultural interpretation, the more in-depth study of local schools (Rishtan, Gijduvan, Khiva, Samarkand), and the emergence of new approaches to the interpretation of decorative motifs and the terminology of master potters. In addition, the influence of the Soviet period, the meanings of ornamentation, the role of globalization and tourism, and new research trends in the period of independence are discussed.
