This article examines the development of rhetoric and the tradition of public speaking in antiquity. In ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, rhetorical discourse played a crucial role in political, social, and legal life. The study explores the origins of rhetorical theory, tracing its early development to the works of Corax and Tisias, who are considered pioneers of rhetorical education. The philosophical foundations of rhetoric developed by classical Greek thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, and Lysias are analyzed. Particular attention is given to Aristotle’s systematic approach to rhetoric, especially his concepts of persuasion and rhetorical structure. In the Roman period, rhetoric gained further significance through the works of Cicero and Tacitus, who emphasized the importance of eloquence in political leadership and legal practice. The article also highlights the main rhetorical principals of antiquity, including persuasive strategies, rhetorical organization and stylistic devices. The study concludes that classical rhetoric continues to influence modern discourse analysis, pragmatics, and communication studies.
