Abstract

This article analyzes the stylistic and pragmatic role of time-indicating words in literary texts. It examines temporal deixis markers (“now,” “yesterday,” “then,” “at that time”) as key elements not only for situating events in time but also for enhancing dramatic effect, revealing the inner world of characters, and shaping the rhythm of the narrative. The study draws on examples from classic English and Uzbek literature, including Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” Dickens’s “Great Expectations,” and Qodiriy’s “Bygone Days.” The findings demonstrate that temporal markers play a crucial role in structuring the text and intensifying its emotional impact.
