POETICS OF MEMORY AND TRAUMA IN RUSSIAN LIEUTENANT GENERATION PROSE

The article examines the poetics of memory and psychic trauma in works by frontline writers Y.V.Bondarev, G.Y.Baklanov, K.D.Vorobyov and V.P.Nekrasov. Drawing on novellas and novels published between 1946 and 1969, the study traces motifs of returning memory, survivor's guilt, rupture with the pre-war world and silence as a form of testimony. The analysis relies on works by A.G.Bocharov, L.I.Lazarev, I.A.Dedkov, N.L.Leiderman, M.N.Lipovetsky and on contemporary trauma studies by A.M.Etkind. The lieutenants’ generation is shown to have produced a distinctive language of war testimony based on autobiographical authenticity and a compressed trench chronotope.
