THE STUDY OF IRONY IN ENGLISH LINGUISTICS

The article analyzes the history of the study of irony in English linguistics, the main theoretical approaches and current research areas. The article discusses the role of verbal irony in the semantic-pragmatic interface, paralinguistic means, contextual factors and inaccuracies in the interpretation process. The article emphasizes the relevance of sarcasm studies in English linguistics and provides conclusions focused on the later areas of pragmalinguistics and corpus linguistics.
