THE PROBLEM OF FUNCTIONAL EQUIVALENCE IN LITERARY TRANSLATION (FORMAL AND FUNCTIONAL APPROACHES)

This article provides a theoretical analysis of the concept of functional equivalence, which occupies an important place in translation studies. It reveals the conceptual differences between formal and functional approaches and, drawing on the views of Eugene Nida, Peter Newmark, Viktor Komissarov, and Mona Baker, examines the essence, criteria, and role of functional equivalence in the translation process. The study particularly emphasizes the significance of functional equivalence in the translation of religious discourse and substantiates its communicative and pragmatic features.
