This article examines the pedagogical foundations of assessing writing skills in English as a foreign language. Writing is considered one of the most complex language competencies because it involves grammatical accuracy, lexical richness, logical organization of ideas, and communicative effectiveness. The study analyzes the main principles of writing assessment, including validity, reliability, practicality, and authenticity. It also discusses different types of assessment such as diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment as well as formal and informal assessment. Particular attention is given to modern pedagogical approaches to evaluating students’ writing, including peer assessment and self-assessment techniques. The results indicate that an effective writing assessment system contributes to the development of students’ critical thinking, academic literacy, and communicative competence.
