MODERN THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR INTERPRETING FUTURE ENGINEERS’ GENERAL TECHNICAL COMPETENCE

Abstract

This article deeply examines the essence and content of the concepts of “competence” and “competency” in the process of interpreting the general technical competence of future engineers and applies them as the theoretical and methodological basis for its elucidation. The conceptual content of general technical competence is explained on the basis of a metaphorical “house model.” According to this model, the main competencies that constitute general technical competence—information competence, technical competence, research competence, and leadership competence—are considered as a unified system. The role of each component in engineering activity, its functional position, and the mechanisms of their mutual integration are substantiated through scientific analysis. The research results indicate the necessity of interpreting general technical competence as a multi-component, integrative, and functionally coherent system and reveal the methodological significance of a competency-based approach in training future engineers.
