PLANT NAMES IN ANCIENT AND CLASSICAL WRITTEN SOURCES

This article analyzes the formation, historical development, and terminologization of plant names (phytonyms) in the Uzbek language based on ancient and classical written sources. The study examines the lexical-semantic features, nominative principles, and linguocultural significance of phytonyms found in ancient Turkic inscriptions, classical literature, and medical-scientific works. It explains that the naming of plants based on external characteristics, color, shape, smell, and functional properties is closely connected with the people’s experience of perceiving nature. Special attention is paid to semantic changes such as narrowing and broadening of meaning in the historical development of phytonyms and their role in the formation of scientific terminology. The research results confirm that plant names recorded in ancient and classical written sources played a significant role in the development of modern Uzbek botanical terminology and contribute to the continuity of the national terminological system.
